Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." This is the First Amendment of the US. Constitution, the most important of our Bill of Rights.
I emphasize, "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech," because Congress is now in the process of doing just that, making a law abridging freedom of speech. Some of our representatives favor a constitutional amendment to prohibit the desecration the U.S. flag. The amendment would read, "The Congress and the states shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.’
Hate-mongers have tallied around symbols to burn witches, enslave African-Americans, had Japanese-Americans into camps, and exterminate Jews, invading private lives and robbing them of liberty. The flag itself is not freedom. It’s a symbol. This proposed amendment is a legal aberration that desecrates liberty, while taking power from you.
Flag burning is perhaps a confused expression, but clearly the First Amendment protects this, right. If demonstrators burn a flag, dialogue with them, Don’t impose your will them. Take away their First Amendment right and you give reason to their fiery demonstration. Instead, show your love for liberty, and allow others to freely demonstrate. Don’t be fooled. Liberty is more important than symbols. How ironic that Congress would use a symbol of liberty to take away liberty. They aren’t the first to use symbols in this way. Veterans organizations hold flag burning ceremonies every year to protect the flag from desecration. It seems a tattered or tarnished flag desecrates this symbol of freedom. Congress’s proposed amendment, wielded by power seekers, could label this patriotic ceremony as a "physical desecration of the flag" What’s next? Perhaps laws prohibiting other "unpatriotic" demonstrations. Write down the names of representatives who favor this amendment, and vote them out of office. Thank God they haven’t passed a law against that.
