{"id":428,"date":"2010-01-28T02:25:34","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T09:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oceanpark.com\/blog\/?p=428"},"modified":"2025-09-15T20:08:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:08:54","slug":"howard-zinn-1922-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oceanpark.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/howard-zinn-1922-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Howard Zinn (1922-2010)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_Zinn\" target-new=\"window\" target=\"howard_zinn\">Howard Zinn<\/a> died yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_Zinn\" target-new=\"window\" target=\"howard_zinn\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/3c\/Howard_Zinn_bombardier_England_1945.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I saw Howard Zinn speak on a couple of occasions.  He could best be described as unpretentious and modest. Yet he spoke truth to power based on his considerable experience helping workers organize.<\/p>\n<p>Zinn was raised in a working class family and fought in World War II as a bombardier.  After the war he worked his way through college and earned a doctorate in history.  He became an influential civil rights activist and peace activist.  He had a deep understanding of society and the skewed distribution of both power and wealth.  He wrote the popular book <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_People%27s_History_of_the_United_States\" target-new=\"window\" target=\"zinn_peoples_history\">A People&#8217;s History of the United States<\/a>.
