On Air Line-Up, Early '70's

The images below were taken from a Sales kit sent to advertisers from about 1973.
Special thanks to our own Bob Anderson for providing these time pieces!

Bob Arthur & John Babcock did mornings back then.

Text Reads:

Bob Arthur and John Babcock co-anchor a daily morning program of news and information presented in a refreshingly differnt manner.  From 5 till 9 am they broadcast the news in an easy to understand conversational style punctuated with telephone calls to newsmakers whose stories are in the spotlight at that moment.  Newstalk Los Angeles needs to start the day: the ABC world news, financial summaries, sports reports, weather and traffic advisories and interesting commentary.  Newstalk is the perfect start to any day and a host of satisfied listeners and sponsors have told us so.

Michael Jackson did the midday shift and had been
with the station about 7 years by the time of this.

Text Reads:

One of the best interviewers in broadcasting today, Michael has been entertaining, informing and amusing KABC listeners with his unique approach to talk since 1966.  Intelligent and perceptive, Jackson is equally at home on the phone with international newsmakers as well as local callers.  He also hosts an emmy award winning local TV program and has been highlighted in a newsweek story on talk personalities.  His common touch has amassed a tremendous following of concerned listeners and satisfied sponsors.

Future morning host Ken Minyard did afternoons then without a partner.

Text Reads:

This is a time for concern.  Knowledge and experience change and renew themselves on an almost daily basis.  It is difficult to find one's self and the role in society assigned us.  Ken Minyard has built his program on concern for human relations.  Open and honest, listeners trust and believe in Ken and listen to what he has to say.  This keeps his audience involved and his sponsors pleased.

Marv Gray was heard in the evenings.

Text Reads:

Newspaper publisher, C.I.A. member, OSS Espionage Officer, author and a man described by Esquire magazine as "a combination Lawrence of Arabia and Lord Nelson, that's Marv Gray!"  With that background and a passion for truth, Marv has established himself as one of the most provocative men in broadcasting today.  This uncompromising manner has established a loyal audience which is highly responsive to Marv and his sponsors.

elliot

This hipster hosted late nights with a show geared for the 'young crowd'.
Today Elliot is the spokesperson for Yoko Ono & the John Lennon estate.

Text Reads:

Elliot Mintz is into what's happening today and he communicates that fact to young adult Los Angeles nightly on KABC.  All of the subjects that fascinate the mind in development and change turn up to be discussed.  The new generation of broadcast personalities is typified by Elliot Mintz: Alert, aware, involved and able to relate to his audience in a manner that makes them feel a part of his program and makes sponsors feel results.

Ray Briem worked the graveyard shift from midnight - 5AM.

Text Reads:

All night long Los Angeles talks to Ray Briem.  And all night long Ray Briem talks to the world.  Famous for his calls to all parts of the globe, Ray brings a new awareness to his audience by introducing them, via the telephone, to people who reside in small towns and villages all over the earth.  Politically minded, Ray has established a position with his listeners that keeps him busy on the line midnight till dawn and sponsors happy round the clock.

Keith Jackson was KABC's Director of Sports.
He still does college football games for ABC-TV to this very day!

Text Reads:

Acknowledged by his contemporaries to be the best all-round sports broadcaster in the business today, Keith Jackson is heard presenting timely reports and incisive commentary on KABC during Newstalk in the mornings.  Keith is there when sports history is made; as commentator during the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, on assignment for ABC's Wide World of Sports, or hosting The ABC College Football Game of The Week and the NBA Game of The Week.  For high-scoring results sponsors and listeners have found Keith Jackson to be a winner.

Bill Russell provided an insider's perspective of the game.

Text Reads:

His uniform number may have been number 6, but to Los Angeles' sports fans he's number 1!  The former Celtic great and basketball all-star brings a rare combination of knowledge, insight and charm to his program and tells it like it really is in the world of competitive sport.  But, the Bill Russell Program is more than that, it's also a very real guy talking to people he likes from Muhammed Ali and Howard Cosell to the kid in Pasadena or the Glendale housewife with results to please not only the listener but the sponsor.

This Olivia Newton-John look-a-like was none other than Kelly Lange.
Originally billed on the air as 'Dawn O'Day', she was one of the KABC
'Ladybirds' who provided airborne traffic reports from the KABC 'copter.

Text Reads:

Freeway fighting should be the official sport of Los Angeles as millions play the game daily on 500 miles on concrete leading in and out of the city.  And, if the sport had a referee, it would have to be KABC's Kelly Lange who has reported on conditions affecting traffic and travel since 1967.  Kelly also has a career that's on the move, appearing as co-host of a weekend TV show and doing the weather on a Los Angeles television station.

The inimitable 'Mr. Blackwell' gave his spin on fashions faux pas.

Text Reads:

World famous as a designer who thinks for himself, Mr. Blackwell has been at the center of the fashion industry since he created the now legendary list of the "Ten Worst Dressed Women."  On his program, lifestyle is his forte and he is an expert on what to wear and how to live in the rapidly changing California environment.  For all the controversy he has stirred in the brittle world of fashion, Mr. Blackwell brings unbelievable warmth and charm to his KABC listeners and success to his sponsors.
